the Hazard Household Waste section below)

Recycling bins can be purchased by stopping by the
Municipal Building at 2 Race Street and are $20 each.
The following items can be recycled:
Note: Be sure to remove all food waste from all
containers. Remaining food waste in recyclables can cause an entire load
to be contaminated.
- PLASTICS AND FOOD CONTAINERS: Plastics #1-7,
Aluminum, steel, and tin cans, Soda bottles (lids removed), Milk
jugs, Soft drink cans, Water bottles (lids removed), Household
product jugs, Glass jars (lids removed), Dairy, juice, and broth
cardboard containers, flattened.
- PAPER: including office paper, newspaper,
colored paper, junk mail, window envelopes, telephone books,
paperback books, folders, advertisements, magazines all can be
recycled. Place the paper inside a brown paper bag in the recycling
container. (All of these items can also be recycled at your
convenience in the bins behind the Borough Building).
- PAPERBOARD: can also be recycled curbside and
placed in with other recycled paper. Paperboard includes shoe boxes,
cereal boxes, pasta boxes, and tissue boxes. Please flatten these
items prior to recycling. Paperboard cannot be recycled behind the
- CORRUGATED CARDBOARD: can also be recycled
curbside, but must be flattened, folded up to a size less than 3
feet in length or width square, and placed in the recycling bin. You
can also put it in a paper bag alongside the recycling bin. Due to
the small apertures on the recycling truck that fits on Edgewood's
streets, simply flattening corrugated boxes is not enough -- they
have to be broken down folded up.
Republic Services prefers to receive the recycling materials "loose" in
the bins and not tied up in plastic bags. Bags have to be cut open,
which takes time. If a bag is black or dark, they are most likely going
to put it in their trash, which goes to a landfill. Please put
your recycling out in the blue recycling bins and NOT in plastic bags.
Materials That Can NOT Be Recycled in Edgewood:
Plastic bags (take them to Giant Eagle's bin for recycling),
styrofoam cups, containers, & packing peanuts, food waste (rinse food
from all containers), tissues, paper towels, tissue paper, shredded
paper, plastic lids, aluminum foil.
Anything smaller than 2" square will contaminate the glass to be
recycled due to the way glass is sorted at the recycling plant. Even if
it's potentially a recyclable material, such as paper or plastic, if it
is less than 2" square it will contaminate glass collection. No plastic
lids, no shredded or wadded up paper, no balls of aluminum foil, and no
tiny medicine bottles or caps.
